Ayurveda and the Humors: Vata, Pitta, Kapha
Ayurveda views the body through the lens of the humors—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. This ancient system is rooted in earth-based principles that help us understand the body and restore balance in life. Ayurveda uses the elements to communicate what happens within us. From digestion to conception and through all of life's cycles, these humors work to maintain our harmony and wellbeing. Air, Ether, Fire, Water, and Earth are the building blocks of our bodies, our planet, and the entire cosmos.
Ayurveda categorizes these humors into three main types:
Vata (Air/Ether)
Pitta (Fire/Water)
Kapha (Earth/Water)
Everyone possesses a unique combination of these elements. While all three are present, the proportions vary for each person. For example, I am predominantly Kapha with a secondary Vata. My Pitta often plays a role in either supporting or aggravating my dominant elements, typically the latter. This dynamic guides my journey to balance earth, water, air, and ether within myself, using fire to support harmony. While this may sound complex, it can be quite simple to understand and apply.
